NSW records sixth day of zero local COVID-19 cases, beaches close due to overcrowding - ABC News

NSW recorded its sixth day of no new locally acquired cases of COVID-19 in the 24 hours to 8:00pm last night.

There were 11,343 tests conducted in the reporting period, compared with the previous day's total of 17,431.

Virus fragments have again been detected in two sewage treatment plants; Liverpool and Glenfield.

The Liverpool waste treatment plant takes in a catchment of close to 180,000 people from suburbs including Holsworthy, Moorebank, Hoxton Park, Casula, Hammondville, Liverpool, Warwick Farm, and Leppington.

The Glenfield treatment plant, which takes in a catchment of more than 160,000 people, covers suburbs including Airds, Campbelltown, Eagle Vale, Englorie Park, Leumeah, Macquarie Fields, Macquarie Links, Menangle Park, and Minto.

Virus fragments were also found at the Glenfield treatment plant on Wednesday.

NSW Health has asked everyone who lives, works or has visited these areas to monitor for symptoms and get tested immediately if they appear.

"High testing rates are necessary to give confidence that no cases are going undetected in the community," NSW Health's Dr Chatu Yapa said.

"Everyone who gets tested is playing an important role in helping to contain the spread of COVID-19."

Inland parts of NSW are in the midst of an extreme heatwave and health authorities want people to be prepared for the high temperatures when presenting for COVID-19 testing.

"Most COVID-19 testing clinics are located indoors with air con [sic] or are drive-throughs where you remain in your car," a spokesperson said.

"If you need a test and it's hot outside: plan ahead, bring a water bottle, seek shade where you can, wear a wide-brim hat, sunglasses, sun screen."

The Royal National Park rangers have already closed Wattamolla and Bonnie Vale beaches after large numbers of people flocked to these popular swimming spots to escape the heat.

To minimise the risk of overcrowding at busy beaches like Bondi, Bronte and Coogee there will be constant patrols by police and rangers over the long weekend, the Waverley Council said.

Fencing will be installed at the picnic huts at Bronte and Tamarama to create separation between groups and barbeques will also be switched off at all parks from 3:00pm each day until Tuesday.

Biddigal Reserve at North Bondi will also be closed on Australia Day.

The Northern Beaches Council will be using drones to monitor social distancing during the heatwave and will shut beaches if they become too crowded.

More to come.
