NSW records eight new local coronavirus cases as masks mandated in greater Sydney - Sydney Morning Herald

NSW has recorded eight new local coronavirus cases in the latest reporting period, all linked to known clusters.

Of those eight announced on Sunday, two are connected to household contacts of a case linked to the Avalon cluster, five are related to the Berala cluster and one is a household contact of a known source.

Three further cases were detected in returned travellers hotel quarantine and 18,923 tests were reported.

Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant revealed the results of genomic testing on the Berala cluster, which has grown to 13 cases, showing that it is linked to the patient transport driver and not the Avalon cluster.

"We have been dealing with two different strains that have been causing clusters. We had a family group who had returned from overseas and were transported to a health facility," she said.

Dr Chant said contact tracing had found that one of the patient transport workers acquired COVID-19 and passed it on to a colleague, who visited the BWS store at Berala "for a fleeting period of time," showing that transmission at the store had occurred.

"This assists us greatly... it means we have less missing links."

NSW Health has revised its advice for those who attended the BWS store on Woodburn Rd at Berala between Tuesday 22 December and Thursday 31 December inclusive.

Dr Chant said 2000 people had already been contacted in relation to the location and that more would follow.

It comes as greater Sydney residents will have to wear masks in some public indoor spaces from Sunday, with a $200 fine for those caught flouting the new rules from Monday.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian on Saturday said it would be compulsory to wear a mask in a number of settings including shopping centres, public transport, attending an entertainment venue such as a cinema, places of worship, hair and beauty salons and gaming areas of establishments. Staff at hospitality venues will also have to wear a mask.

New venues added to alert list

NSW Health on Saturday night updated its list of venues attended by people while infectious, adding a number of western Sydney venues.

Anyone who attended BWS at Berala on the following dates is considered a close contact. They must get tested immediately and self-isolate for 14 days from last contact regardless of the test result. The dates are: December 22, 12.41pm-9.15pm; December 23, 1.40pm-9.15pm; December 24, 12.40pm-9.17pm; December 26, 9.55am-7.15pm; December 27, 12.39pm-8.15pm; December 28, 9.30am-7.15pm; December 29, 1.41pm-9.15pm; December 30, 12.45pm-9.15pm; December 31, 8.30am-3pm.

Also affected is the Coffee Club at Stockland Shellharbour. Anyone who visited for an hour or more on Sunday, December 27, between 11.30am and 12.45pm is considered a close contact, must get tested and isolate until receiving further advice, regardless of the test result.

Two other new venues of concern on Saturday are the Australian Motor Traders on Haberfield Road from 4.30pm to 5pm on Tuesday and Officeworks Punchbowl from 3.35pm to 3.45pm on the same day.

The following additional venues were also announced on Saturday. People who attended these venues should monitor for symptoms and get isolated if they develop:

• Westpoint Blacktown between 2.40pm and 3.20pm on Monday
• El Jannah Blacktown between 3.20pm and 4pm on Monday
• Blacktown Service NSW between 12.15pm and 1pm on Wednesday
• Hillsong Hills Campus between 8pm and 8.45pm on Tuesday
• Woolworths, Eastgardens Shopping Centre, Pagewood on Wednesday between 6.30am and 1.30pm, as well as on Friday between 7am-10am
• Hariri Chickens, Kogarah between 1.45pm and 2pm on Thursday
