A man’s body has been recovered after he was swept off Coffs Harbour’s breakwall as a huge surf pounded the NSW coastline this week.
The 20-year-old’s body was located about 9.30am on Saturday by family members who had been keeping a vigil by the rocks following a three-day search by emergency crews.
The victim vanished on Thursday evening as he was strolling along the southern breakwall on Jordan Esplanade, a short distance behind a 24-year-old woman.
A powerful wave crashed over the breakwall behind the woman and, when she turned around, the man was no longer there.
The man’s body was retrieved after a co-ordinated search by Coffs/Clarence police district, Marine Area Command, Marine Rescue, NSW Ambulance, Westpac Lifesaver Helicopter and Coffs Harbour lifeguards.
The victim is yet to be formally identified. A report will be prepared for the coroner.
The dangerous surf claimed further lives south of Sydney as tragedy struck again on Friday night at Port Kembla.
Three men were killed after a large wave broke onto a group of rock fishermen, knocking several of them into the surf.
