Coronavirus live updates: NSW records five new local cases, Brisbane emerges from three-day lockdown - ABC News - ABC News

We're getting a lot of questions from people in Brissie and NSW who, quite understandably, want to know when they'll be able to go to Victoria.

Unfortunately, it's still unclear how much longer Sydney and Brisbane will be considered "red zones" by Victoria.

"I think this is going to be a day-by-day situation and assessment," Police Minister Lisa Neville said.

So I'm sorry team, but it sounds like we might have to wait until tomorrow until we hear if things have changed. I know that doesn't make things much easier for you, but we'll bring you any news on changing zones as soon as we get it.

Ms Neville said factors that would be considered included the coronavirus numbers in NSW, where the spread is, whether any new cases are linked to outbreaks, and whether the chain of transmission is able to be identified.

"It will be up to the Chief Health Officer to determine when it's safe to enable people to come back from Sydney," she said.

However she reminded people that there was an exemptions process, and urged people to put in an application if they believed they met the criteria.

  • an end of life event
  • going to a funeral
  • returning home for health, wellbeing, care or compassionate reasons
  • emergency relocation
  • caring for an animal on the other side of the border
  • Australian Defence Force members undertaking military transfers

Today she said she expected that the approvals process for exemptions may be shortened by the permit system going live, because many of the applications came from places in NSW that is now considered an "orange zone".
