Victoria records no new coronavirus cases and no deaths for 18th straight day - ABC News

Victoria has recorded an 18th consecutive day without any new coronavirus cases or deaths, the Department of Health and Human Services says.

Three cases are still classed as active.

The department said 17,412 test results had been received in the past day.

Officers from the department are meeting every flight from Adelaide into Melbourne Airport, following the coronavirus outbreak in South Australia.

South Australian Premier Steven Marshall today reported the state had detected one new case of coronavirus, bringing the number of confirmed and suspected infections associated with a cluster in Adelaide's northern suburbs to 20.

Victorian officials are taking the details of people arriving from South Australia, asking them where they have been and carrying out temperature and symptom checking.

People travelling from coronavirus hotspots in Adelaide are required to be tested or be treated as a close contact and asked to self-isolate for 14 days.

Deputy Chief Health Officer Allen Cheng yesterday urged anyone who had been in South Australia in the past 14 days to check the exposure sites listed on the SA Health website and take any necessary action such as quarantining.

Professor Cheng said anyone with symptoms, no matter how mild, should get tested and self-isolate until they receive their result.

Premier Daniel Andrews yesterday urged Victorians to remain vigilant about sticking to the rules, warning it was inevitable that Victoria's run of days of no new infections would eventually be broken.

"There will be cases in the future, there will be outbreaks, and we will manage those well," he said.

On Sunday, Mr Andrews is expected to outline plans to further ease restrictions.

Yesterday, in the latest sign of life moving towards normal, Melbourne Museum, the Immigration Museum and Scienceworks reopened for the first time in several months.

However, Melbourne Lord Mayor Sally Capp yesterday announced the city's usual New Year's Eve fireworks display would not go ahead this summer due to the pandemic.

Instead, the city will hold New Year Street Feasts, a celebration of food and wine across 11 city precincts.

Patrons will be required to book to attend any of the more than 50 venues taking part in the event.

Ms Capp said the event, which will run over New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, aimed to draw people into the city without drawing mass crowds to one location.

Mr Andrews said yesterday the state's public health officials were working with Tennis Australia to ensure its plans to stage the Australian Open were COVID-safe, warning the arrangements were "not settled by a long way".
