A tense standoff between police and a gunman holed up inside a house in a quiet neighbourhood in southwest Western Australia has entered its eighth hour.
Police responded to reports of multiple gun shots coming from a house in McKeown Place, Margaret River about 6pm AWST on Sunday.
Heavily armed officers swarmed the small street and have remained there overnight as they try to negotiate with the gunman.
Just after 4am AWST, police said there was no one being held hostage and there was no risk to public safety but officers remain outside the property negotiating with the offender.
Homes immediately adjacent to the property have now all been evacuated, while other nearby residents have been told to remain inside their homes until further notice.
Police have urged the Margaret River community to avoid the area between McKeown Place, Bovell Avenue, William Place and Georgette Drive, including the park area within that boundary, until the incident has been resolved.
