A Gold Coast man is fighting for his life after he was allegedly punched by another man in the early hours of Monday morning.
Police said three people had been fishing at Southport when they returned to their car on Barney St at 12.10am, at which time a “verbal altercation” broke out between a 33-year-old from the group and 45-year-old man, a resident from a nearby unit complex.
Police said the resident came outside and the altercation “allegedly continued on the driveway”.
The 33-year-old man is accused of punching the older resident once in the face, causing him to fall backwards, hit his head on a skip bin and then on the concrete.
The group called emergency services, and the 45-year-old man was rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition.
The 33-year-old man has been charged with one count of grievous bodily harm, and will appear in Southport Magistrates Court on October 19.
