It's very hard to overstate how absolutely devastating it will be if the 5km rule doesn't change in the next set of restrictions. The Victorian press conference has finished
The daily press conference from Victoria is finished.
Not all of the content was COVID-19 related, so I guess we learned something new today.
Here is a summary:
- There are 227 active case in Victoria
- There are nine new case, zero deaths
- Six cases are under investigation
- There is a further one mystery case, with the postcode of 3046 now added to the list
- On October 12, all Year 7 students will go back to school along with all primary school students, VCE, VCAL students and special schools.
- For Years 8, 9 and 10, they will return to face-to-face learning on October 26.

Daniel Andrews ducks questions on his jacket
Premier Daniel Andrews was asked (in jest of course) about where his North Face Jacket has gone.
He has not worn it in a number of weeks.
The Premier says he has not given it a lot of thought.
Weather experts say Summer is hotter than Winter, so this could be bad news for the jacket in 2020.
There is no word about how the jacket feels about this snub.

Professor Sutton says measures being established for bushfire preparation
Professor Sutton said work is being done to allow people from Melbourne to travel to region properties to prepare for the bushfire season.
"There will have to be bushfire prep in advance of the season," he said.
"That is being worked on at the moment. The communications and allowances for that are being worked through."

That number is 227.

NSW has one new case, no community transmission
There have been no locally acquired coronavirus cases found in NSW in the 24 hours to 8:00pm yesterday.
It's the 10th consecutive day the state has recorded no locally acquired cases.
One case has been recorded in an overseas traveller in hotel quarantine.
Only 4,789 people were tested in the reporting period.

How has the Chadstone case been able to spread its tentacles so far not just across the south-east but into the Mitchell Shire?
Professor Sutton answered a common question on the blog:
It does relate to the fact that any worker has family members and they can transmit to those family members when symptomatic but before they are symptomatic.Those family members are in essential work industries as well and go to those work sites.
Those workers, you would hope, are all wearing masks but again to the degree that compliance isn't in place or that people drop their guard then there can be transmission within workplaces as well.
Those workplace colleagues have household and family members as well and on it goes.

What happens if Melbourne does not hit the five-cases-a-day threshold?
Professor Sutton said:
We do have to meet the thresholds. The mystery cases in particular is a really important one to meet.
The successful jurisdictions internationally in Australia have gotten to five or fewer cases in a 14-day period when they've been able to maintain control into the long-term.
Places that have haven't met that threshold have not been able to do that.
So that's an important one. With respect to the five average per day, we've always said that we need to look at what those cases are.
If the outbreak numbers are part of that 14-day average that we get to on October 18 or 19, we will look at exactly how well that's controlled.

Professor Sutton has announced the cluster size of the Chadstone outbreak has risen to 24.

New regional case 'may end up being a negative'
Victoria's Chief Health Officer, Professor Brett Sutton, said the new case in Shepparton is being treated as a postive case, but is still being investigated.
Professor Sutton said a rapid test was conducted, and a more thorough test is now underway.

Safety measures will be in place at schools
The Deputy Premier gave the following advice on safety measures:
At secondary schools everyone is wearing a mask.
There will be staggered pick-up and drop-off times where appropriate.
So particularly in our larger primary and secondary schools there will be physical distancing at the school gate.
There will be a very strong message to parents — this is pick-up and drop-off.
It's not dropping off the kids and having a chat at the school gate.
