The State Government will today unveil a plan for all school students in New South Wales to be learning a new curriculum within four years.
Key points:
- The review suggested fewer subjects to prioritise a depth of learning
- It also suggested a new set of HSC subjects be delivered over time
- The changes will start being implemented next year and completed by 2024
The curriculum is facing its biggest overhaul in 30 years and could include the scrapping of the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) for HSC students.
It comes after a review conducted by Professor Geoff Masters, which was highly critical of the current syllabus and its "crowded nature".
The new curriculum will involve kindergarten to year 12 and is proposing a "back to basics" approach, focusing on the fundamentals of maths, English and science.
The Government is pushing ahead with changes suggested in Professor Masters' final report, which includes fewer subjects and fewer time restrictions on teachers delivering content.
"The new syllabuses are designed to address concerns raised with the review about the need to prioritise depth rather than breadth of learning, to better integrate knowledge and skills, and to provide greater flexibility for teachers," Professor Masters wrote in his report.
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the overhaul would declutter the curriculum.
"Literacy and numeracy will remain the focus throughout a student's school experience," she said.
The Higher School Certificate (HSC) is also set for a major shake up, with the review proposing "a new set of HSC subjects" be delivered over time.
It also suggested investigating "the feasibility of not calculating and reporting the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR)".
"I want to see all our young people leaving school confident and equipped to succeed in life," the Education Minister Sarah Mitchell said.
"We want a curriculum that leaves no student behind while challenging students who are advancing faster than others."
The changes will start being implemented next year, and will be complete by 2024.
