MADISON (WKOW)-- Black community leaders throughout the state of Wisconsin held an all-day virtual conversation on racial justice.
Boys and Girls Club CEO and President Michael Johnson along with Madison 365 Publisher and CEO Henry Sanders teamed up to host the Real Talk Virtual Summit on Racial Justice. The summit brought together people of color from Wisconsin to put words into action.
The summit ran from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. One of the topics was the role educators and educational institutions play in social justice and racial equality. When the pandemic is over and students return to the classroom, UW Professor Dr. Gloria Ladson-Billings says there needs to be a hard re-set, especially for black students.
"If going back means going back to what we had before schools closed, that doesn't work for black kids because they weren't doing well in what you had, so the idea for me is that this is an opportunity to literally re-set the entire way we have structured our education system."
Another session brought together corporate leaders across the state. CUNA Mutual Executive Vice President Cedric Ellis explained how to improve workplace culture right now and sustain it.
"Really begin to tear down what I call our barriers to entry for people who look like me," Ellis said. "So really test and challenge your policies, your practices, what you are doing from a recruiting perspective, If you can move beyond the usual places that you go."
Ellis said he is using his voice to create a work environment that allows people of color to show up in a more authentic way.
The summit also had a session on criminal justice reform. The summit received over 2,000 viewers from across the state throughout the day.
