Victoria records another death from coronavirus taking the state toll to 15 - ABC News

A man in his 80s died in a Victorian hospital overnight after contracting COVID-19, taking the state's death toll to 15.

Victoria's Premier Daniel Andrews said nine new cases were confirmed overnight, bringing the total number of cases to 1,328.

"I want to make the point that on Friday there were 3,522 tests that were conducted, that's a big increase," Mr Andrews said.

"We're looking more and we're finding cases and that gives us confidence we are being successful in suppressing this virus."

Mr Andrews said the suppression strategy was working and Victoria was on its way to eliminating COVID-19.

He again flagged a possible reduction in physical distancing restrictions in the state if cases remained low.

The Premier was asked by Sky News on Sunday morning why Victorians could not play golf while the sport was allowed in other states.

"We've taken the view that there are many activities you don't need to do," he said.

"If you let people play golf you're hardly sending a message to Victorians that we need to stay the course, we need to see this through."

The Premier also stood by the decision to keep children learning from home.

"I don't think having a million students … moving around the community every day plus their parents doing drop-offs and pickups, plus a full complement of staff, is consistent with our message to stay at home, nor does it achieve anything other than spreading this virus," he said.

"The Prime Minister was very clear; if you want to know what to do in Victoria then it's the Victorian Government you should be listening too.

"National Cabinet's working well principally because there's a fundamental recognition we all have to flatten our own curve. If we all do that we'll have a much better national response."
