NSW records six new coronavirus cases, including two at aged care facility - Sydney Morning Herald

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has confirmed the state government is considering a bailout for Virgin Australia after Treasurer Dominic Perrottet revealed "significant discussions" with the airline.

Ms Berejiklian would not provide details of the discussions, but Mr Perrottet told Sky News on Sunday that any bailout would include the airline basing itself at the new Western Sydney Airport.

Her confirmation comes as NSW recorded just six new cases of coronavirus in the 24 hours to 8pm Sunday, with at least 4000 more people tested in the past week than the previous week.

There are now 2963 coronavirus cases in NSW. She said the latest coronavirus figures were "very positive".

"We want to encourage all of you who have symptoms, especially in those high risk communities, to please come forward and get tested," Ms Berejiklian said.

"For a Sunday, those numbers are good and the fact we only had six cases identified is also very positive."

NSW Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant said there were now 41 cases of COVID-19 at the Anglicare Newmarch House, the state's largest cluster of coronavirus after the Ruby Princess cruise ship.

There has been two deaths at the western Sydney aged care facility.

A 94-year-old man from the western Sydney facility died on Sunday morning, following the death of a 93-year-old male resident on Saturday.

Dr Chant said there had been two more cases recorded at the home in the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 41 cases – 14 staff and 27 residents.

She said the cluster was under investigation and has warned that there could be more deaths at the facility.

Dr Chant said there would be increased testing this week in areas where there have been COVID-19 cases with no known origin including Sydney's Inner West, Waverley, Woollahra, Randwick, Ryde, Penrith, Liverpool, Blacktown, Cumberland and Westmead.

Ms Berejiklian also said the government had made good progress in talks with teacher and principal groups over the weekend as they prepared for a return to classrooms on May 11.

Some principal have expressed concern over the governemnt's plan to introduce a rostering system for schools from the third week of next term, warning it could be too difficult to implement.

But Ms Berejiklian reiterated that not all students and teachers would be at school every day.

"There will be more face-to-face teaching from May 11," she said, but added it would be a partial return to schools.

Ms Berejiklian said the state government was also focused on creating and saving jobs as part of NSW's financial recovery from the coronavirus crisis. One option could be helping Virgin Australia to relocate its operations to Sydney.

Mr Perrottet said there had been significant discussions with the cash-strapped airline regarding a financial lifeline on the grounds it agreed to base itself at the new Western Sydney airport.

"Virgin should have their headquarters for both Virgin and Tiger in Sydney," Mr Perrottet told Sky on Sunday night.
