Woman shot dead in front of teens: cops - news.com.au

Details have emerged about the shooting of a woman which sparked a major lockdown and manhunt in Queensland.

Emergency services rushed to Robb Place in South Mackay just after 4.30pm Wednesday after reports of multiple shootings.

A woman was found dead at the scene with gunshot wounds to her head, while a man was found with non-life-threatening injuries to his shoulder and hand.

District Officer Superintendent Graeme Paine told media the 34-year-old woman drove a vehicle to Robb Place, where a 31-year-old man approached the car and allegedly discharged a firearm.

“At the time there were two children in the car,” Supt Paine said.

“They immediately left the vehicle and left the residence.”

Supt Paine said a 66-year-old witness rushed to help the woman where it is alleged the 31-year-old man again fired the gun before fleeing the scene.

Police were called to the scene and secured the area before beginning their investigations.

A short time later, Supt Paind said police identified a suspect vehicle and took the 31-year-old man into custody.

The man is in custody with inquiries into the incident ongoing.

“There is no detail for any motive or any reasons for what has occurred,” Supt Paine said.

“The children were young teenagers...it is an absolutely shocking thing to have experienced.

“They were obviously very fearful they went to seek help...that help was provided and the man who gave help has been injured.”

The 31-year-old man was arrested about 7.45pm outside a fast food restaurant on the Bruce Highway.

Police said the man was not physically injured and is assisting officers with inquiries.

Queensland Police earlier declared an emergency situation under the Public Safety Preservation Act locking down the area encompassing Robb Place, Paradise Street, Archibald Street, Kindermar Street and Denton Street.

The exclusion zone remains in place.

Members of the public are still being reminded to avoid the area and those within the exclusion zone are asked to remain indoors until further notice.

Traffic diversions are in place.
