A Canberra man facing family violence offences has told the ACT Magistrates Court he did not understand the seriousness of his bail conditions when he travelled to Queensland.
The 48-year-old was released on bail on Thursday, despite having been extradited from Mackay the previous day.
He had been free on bail since March, when he was arrested for breaching a family violence order and stalking.
At the time he told police he intended to move to Queensland to get a new job as a truck driver.
But that meant he failed to meet his court obligations.
The man is also now facing charges of failing to appear in court.
Man sent hundreds of emails to ex-wife
Police allege that between April 2023 and March 2024 he sent more than 200 emails to his ex-wife, sometimes many on the same day, which included comments like:
"I'm coming over I'm f***** over this shit."
"What you are doing is f***** disgusting after all these years what I have done for you and yours, and all I want is to be able to see my kids you are nothing to me anymore, but a low life piece of shit."
And another message in the early hours of the morning said:
"F***** putrid shallow lowlife you are."
Prosecutors opposed the man's bail application, pointing out that after the bail conditions were imposed in March he left the ACT.
The court heard that showed a disregard for court orders.
But his lawyer told the court the man had gone to Queensland to start over, even changing his contact details, so he could get a fresh start.
His lawyer said he now understands the seriousness of the conditions.
Chief Magistrate Lorraine Walker granted bail, but changed the conditions so the man can return to Queensland and report to police there.
The case will return to court in July.
