Warragamba Dam 'close to spilling' as major rainfall forecast - 9News

Warragamba Dam is likely to spill over in the coming days as rain is forecast for the weekend, WaterNSW has warned.

The damn is currently sitting at 99 per cent capacity and is roughly 24cm away from spilling.

The Bureau of Meteorology has predicted 35mm of catchment rain over the next 48 hours, which means the dam would spill about 40 gigalitres a day at most.

A less likely forecast of 60mm over the Warragamba catchment in the next 48-hours would see a maximum spill of 100 gigalitres a day.

The exact timing and volume of the spill depends on catchment rainfall, Water NSW said.

It is also likely that Greater Sydney dams will continue to spill, including Cataract, Nepean, Woronora, Tallowa, Greaves Creek, Medlow Bath, and Middle Cascades, WaterNSW said.

Tuggerah Lake had been issued with a flood warning earlier today, however, water levels have since dropped below the minor flood level.

The community has been warned to monitor flood and weather warnings issued by the Bureau of Meteorology.

There's been more than 50 spills from Warragamba Dam since 1960.
