The mother of a two-year-old boy who was killed in a murder suicide by his own father over the weekend has hit out at the “evil and cowardly act of violence” as she spoke of her family's grief.
Police discovered the bodies of Rowan, two, and his father James Harrison inside a unit in East Lismore in northern NSW on Sunday evening.
Detectives believe Harrison killed both himself and his son using a deadly gas poisoning system he had set up in the apartment.
Rowan’s mother Sophie Roome, who shared joint custody of the young boy with Harrison, issued a statement on Wednesday afternoon describing her late son as a “beautiful” and “joyful” boy.
"Our family is facing incomprehensible grief," the statement said.
"Our beloved Rowan was taken from us in the most unfathomable way.
"Rowan's life was ended by an evil and cowardly act of violence, perpetrated by a person he should have been able to trust the most. There are no possible excuses for this hurt, and no end to the pain it has caused.
"Rowan was a beautiful, joyful, and adored little boy. He had so many amazing qualities, and his short life was filled with rich and happy experiences."
The family shared a picture showing Rowan smiling in the arms of his mother, who works as an intensive care doctor at Lismore Base Hospital.
Officers were called to the home on Sunday after Dr Roome reported that her son had not returned from a scheduled visit with his father at 4.30pm as planned.
Dr Roome had an apprehended domestic violence order out against her former partner, which had been in place to protect her since July last year.
“My understanding is that the male had an access visit on the day… the mother raised concerns with the fact that they were due to hand over the child at 4.30pm, and by 5.30pm she had contacted the police and we went around to the residence and made the discovery," NSW Police Deputy Commissioner Peter Thurtell said on Monday.
He also said the incident was being treated as a murder suicide.
An investigation into the deaths has been launched under Strike Force McGuren.
NSW Premier Chris Minns said the murder suicide was “completely heartbreaking”.
“I can only imagine what that mum’s going through today,” he said at a press conference on Wednesday.
“It’s an evil act, just an evil act. I’m horrified by it and I’m sure the community is completely in despair about it,”
