Severe weather hits Gold Coast hinterland, with more storms hitting this morning - ABC News

Severe storm cells have hit parts of south-east Queensland overnight, with 222 millimetres falling in three hours at Upper Springbrook in the Gold Coast hinterland.

A severe storm warning was issued by the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) shortly after 7am for the Gold Coast, Coolangatta and Springbrook, saying damaging wind gusts were possible on the coastal fringe for the following hours.

Another severe storm moved onshore towards Coolangatta about 5:30am, while a separate severe cell hit Mount Tamborine and Little Nerang Dam at dawn.

A deepening low pressure system is located off the south coast, bringing the heavy rain activity.

Upper Springbrook recorded the heaviest rain overnight with 312mm falling, including 222mm in the three hours to 12:30am.

Clagiraba Road had 295mm and the Numinbah Valley recorded 124mm in two hours.

Landslides have been reported along Pine Creek Road in Springbrook and the road has been closed, the Department of Transport and Main Roads said.

Acting Mayor Donna Gates said Gold Coast City Council's disaster management centre was stood up just after midnight, with seven crews currently assessing damage to roads in the region.

She said Maudsland Road Bridge has been damaged.

"These events they're just coming far more quickly and more than we'd like," Ms Gates said.

Three people rescued

Police said heavy rain had caused local flooding on the northern Gold Coast, particularly in Upper Coomera and Oxenford.

The SES rescued four cars from floodwaters across Helensvale, Oxford, and Coulson on the Gold Coast.

In one case, a swift water rescue team rescued three people from their car around Helensvale on Friday morning, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services said. No-one was injured.

The SES also received more than 12 calls requesting assistance with leaking roofs.

Up to 50 people at the Big4 Holiday Park in Helensvale were evacuated from the caravan park about 2am.

Owner Theo Whitmont said lower lying areas of the caravan park had been flooded.

"The floodwaters came up and went down quite quickly," he said.

Rain should clear by the afternoon

BOM forecaster Kimba Wong said the heaviest totals were confined to the Gold Coast's south, in the border ranges.

Ms Wong said Brisbane was also drenched with a "line of storms".

"We have found accumulated 10 to 30 millimetres in most gauges around Brisbane since nine o'clock yesterday morning," she said.

Ms Wong said the rain is expected to clear by Friday afternoon.

"If you have a look at the radar, the low-pressure centre, just sitting off the coast, looks very impressive at the moment," Ms Wong said.

"We could see an increase in that rainfall once again, just given how close that is to the coast, it may come a little bit closer and perhaps move overland through the next few hours.

"[It is] expected to drive offshore and weaken pretty quickly as we head into Saturday and take that wet weather with it."
