Live updates: Optus must pay for new passports: Wong; Caddick husband 'confused' by questions; Town under threat from dam - 9News

The chair of the ACCC, Gina Cass-Gottlieb, is speaking in Melbourne, where she's warned petrol retailers about unnecessarily increasing their prices in the wake of the fuel excise cut ending at midnight tonight.

"We are looking for unexpected or abnormal movements in price," she said.

"If we see abnormal increases and movements in price, we will not hesitate to call out what we are seeing, whether by location or by chains who are engaged as retailers in abnormal or unexpected price increases.

"Cass-Gottlieb said it should take around one to two weeks for the increase to make its way to retail prices due to a stockpile of fuel bought by retailers while the excise was halved.

She also said the ACCC would be keeping an eye out for any anti-competitive behaviour.

"If there is any indication of anti-competitive conduct, we will investigate it closely, and if there's evidence of it, we will prosecute it.

"She encouraged motorists to use price-monitoring apps and buy from independent servo chains to help save on petrol.
