Lawyers for Brittany Higgins's alleged rapist Bruce Lehrmann apply for stay on case after Lisa Wilkinson's Logies speech - ABC News

Lawyers for the man accused of raping former Liberal staffer Brittany Higgins have launched a fresh bid to delay the trial because of publicity about a speech at the Logie Awards.

Bruce Lehrmann is accused of sexually assaulting Ms Higgins inside an office in Parliament House in 2019.

He was charged last year after Ms Higgins complained to police, and has pleaded not guilty.

Mr Lehrmann is due to stand trial in the ACT Supreme Court next Monday.

He has already failed a first attempt to stay the case in April, when the court said the trial would go ahead as planned.

In the end, it was delayed after unforeseen circumstances saw Mr Lehrmann looking for a new lawyer.

Now, his legal team has asked the court to consider a new stay application, after publicity that followed a speech by journalist Lisa Wilkinson at the Logie Awards on Sunday night.

Ms Wilkinson won the Logie for Most Outstanding News Coverage or Public Affairs Report for her work on the story.

Mr Lehrmann's barrister Steve Whybrow said more than 800,000 people watched Sunday night's Logie Awards.

He also listed reactions on Twitter and Instagram, as well as a radio program and other news outlets, as evidence of intense attention in the lead-up to the start of the trial.

He said his client was not keen for a delay.

Mr Lehrmann was next week set to face a jury trial, in keeping with the ACT law that those accused of sex crimes must face a jury.

The ACT's Chief Justice Lucy McCallum agreed to hear the application on Tuesday.
