An NRL giveaway of thousands of match tickets for this weekend will go ahead after initially being suspended yesterday, just hours after being announced by Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk.
Key points:
- The Health Minister said yesterday the TGA had informed the NRL the giveaway breached guidelines
- The TGA said there was nothing wrong with the promotion
- State's vaccine coordinator said "common sense has been applied"
The NRL put up 3,000 tickets to be given away at several state vaccination hubs around south-east Queensland on Thursday and Friday, as an incentive for walk-in vaccinations.
But on Thursday afternoon Health Minister Yvette D'Ath held a snap press conference to announce the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) had informed the NRL the giveaway breached guidelines as only fully vaccinated people could be given incentives or rewards.
Describing the situation as "bureaucracy gone mad", Ms D'Ath said the NRL had suspended the giveaway.
However, a spokesperson for the TGA later said in a statement they had not halted the giveaway.
"The NRL are offering some free tickets to Queenslanders through Ticketek to those who have had or will have their second vaccination at the vaccination centre," the TGA spokesperson said.
"The TGA considers the NRL to be fully compliant and did not consider taking compliance action against the NRL at any stage."
On Friday morning, the Health Minister's office confirmed to ABC Radio Brisbane that the giveaway would continue as originally planned, with both first and second dose bookings eligible.
'Common sense has been applied'
Queensland police deputy commissioner Shane Chelepy told ABC Radio Brisbane on Friday morning that "common sense has been applied".
"The 2,000 double passes that were given out yesterday through our vaccination hubs are good to go for people to go to the NRL tonight," he said.
"The TGA came out yesterday afternoon and clarified they were happy with what the NRL has done, and people will be able to go out to the football."
Another 1,000 tickets for Saturday's Storm and Panthers game will be given out as planned today at the Logan Entertainment Centre and Mount Warren Park vaccination hubs.
Mr Chelepy said walk-in appointments were available at all the hubs.
Most of the state-run vaccination hubs are operating on a walk-in basis, he said, with the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre vaccination hub also accepting walk-ins on Saturday.
"We've got the BCEC staying open until 7:30pm this weekend while Riverfire is on, so anyone coming in to Riverfire if they want to come in a little bit earlier, they can walk straight into the BCEC and get their vaccination," Mr Chelepy said.
Two pop-up clinics will also operate at Lang Park this weekend, but Mr Chelepy warned anyone wanting a vaccine at the games not to drink any alcohol beforehand.
Walk-in vaccinations will also be available at the Brisbane Exhibition Centre hub this weekend as thousands flock to the CBD for Riverfire, he said.
