Melbourne childcare centre named as Tier 1 exposure site

By Ashleigh McMillan

A childcare centre in Melbourne’s south-east is the latest tier-1 exposure site, with some visitors to a supermarket and butcher in the city’s inner north potentially required to isolate for 14 days.

The 123KIDS Early Learning Centre in Hampton Park, around 36 kilometres south-east of the Melbourne CBD, has been listed as a tier-1 exposure for coronavirus on September 22 and 23. Those who visit a tier-1 site must isolate for two weeks and get tested immediately.

Health authorities have also listed the Brunswick SUPA IGA and Madina Halal Meats Brunswick – both on the suburb’s busy Sydney Road – as tier-2 exposure sites on September 16. Some staff and patrons will be required to isolate for 14 days and will be directly contacted by the Department of Health.

A number of exposure sites have been listed in the regional Victorian towns of Wodonga, Warrnambool, Camperdown, Terang and Shepparton.

The full list of exposure sites can be found here.

Queensland’s eased mask mandate expected to tighten by the end of the year

By Stuart Layt

Queenslanders should take advantage of the relaxation in the mask mandate announced on Friday, because it will probably be much tougher by the end of the year, experts say.

As the state recorded no new cases of coronavirus on Friday, the Queensland government announced a slight easing of mask restrictions.

In all venues where people take their mask off to eat or drink, such as pubs, clubs, cafes and even cinemas, people can now take their mask off once they are seated.

Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young said the state could afford to make the change because, unlike NSW and Victoria, there was virtually no virus in the Queensland community.

But she said that would not always be the case.

“We still don’t know when the next case might come into Queensland so we just need to persevere with masks for a bit longer,” she said.

UQ virologist Ian Mackay said Queenslanders should view the easing as a reward for helping keep the virus out of the state, but also warned it could not last forever.

Sydneysiders could be barred from regional NSW until more vaccines given

By Lucy Cormack and Tom Rabe

Sydneysiders could be barred from visiting regional NSW until the state hits 80 per cent full vaccination under a plan being considered by the state government.

The NSW crisis cabinet met on Friday to discuss possible freedoms that would be granted under the 80 per cent road map to lift restrictions, including an increase to home visitors and a return to community sport.

Higher caps for hospitality, weddings and funerals were also options considered on Friday by the cabinet for the second stage of the state’s pandemic recovery plan, which is set to be released next week.

However low vaccination rates in some regions of NSW have prompted the government to reconsider allowing regional travel after the first vaccination target of 70 per cent is met.

October 11 is firming as the day the state emerges from lockdown at 70 per cent, with the 80 per cent milestone expected to be hit two weeks later.

All freedoms introduced at 70 and 80 per cent rates will be for fully vaccinated people only, however the unvaccinated are expected to access the same freedoms by the end of the year.

Victoria Police order investigation after officers overrun at anti-lockdown protest

By Chris Vedelago, Cameron Houston and Michael Fowler

Victoria Police is conducting a review into its handling of last weekend’s anti-lockdown protests following furious complaints from the police union when multiple officers were injured after being overrun during a botched crowd control operation in Richmond.

The Police Association is concerned police command left officers dangerously exposed without riot equipment and in insufficient numbers to confront hundreds of demonstrators at last Saturday’s “Freedom Rally”.

Despite attempts to keep the crowd at bay using capsicum spray and batons, severely outnumbered officers were quickly overrun by the surging crowd.

The collapse of the thinly manned police line led to shocking scenes of officers being trampled and assaulted in a wild melee between the walls of a steep stone gorge at the eastern end of Victoria Street. One masked and hooded figure ranged freely among the isolated police officers, punching and tackling four with impunity before fleeing in the stampede.

Over the course of the day, 10 officers were injured – including six sent to hospital and police carried out 235 arrests.

Union boss Wayne Gatt has demanded an explanation from Chief Commissioner Shane Patton for command’s apparent loss of control.
