Australia's top diplomat Frances Adamson has been announced as South Australia's next governor.
Key points:
- Frances Adamson has been appointed SA's new governor
- She is Australia's foreign affairs secretary
- She is returning to South Australia after leaving the state more than three decades ago
SA Premier Steven Marshall said the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade secretary would replace current Governor Hieu Van Le.
Ms Adamson, 60, was also Australia's ambassador to China from 2011 to 2015.
Mr Van Le's term will finish in August and Ms Adamson will be sworn in in October.
She will be the state's third female governor.
Ms Adamson will be leaving her job in foreign affairs on June 25.
Mr Marshall said her international experience would be "vitally important" during the state's recovery from the coronavirus pandemic.
"Her wealth of knowledge on the international stage will put South Australia in good stead as we continue to put South Australia on the global map," he said.
Ms Adamson, an old scholar of the University of Adelaide and Walford Anglican School for Girls, said it was a "deep honour" to be appointed as governor.
She has led the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade since 2016.
"My area of expertise is international relations and my very strong focus will be assisting the state and the people of South Australia to further develop their links with the world, through trade and investment and people-to-people links," she said this morning.
Praise for diplomatic service
Foreign Affairs Minister Marise Payne said Ms Adamson was one of "Australia's most accomplished and respected public servants and diplomats".
"Ms Adamson has led the department ably during a period of considerable strategic challenge, including leading implementation of the Pacific Step-up, enhanced engagement in South-East Asia and a reorientation of the aid program towards regional recovery from COVID–19," Senator Payne said.
Ms Adamson served as international adviser to former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull and chief of staff to Labor defence and foreign affairs minister Stephen Smith.
She is the daughter of former South Australian state Liberal MP Jennifer Cashmore.
She said she was keen to get back to South Australia after leaving 36 years ago and spending 20 of those years overseas.
She said she and her husband Rod wanted to be as "opening and welcoming and inviting as we can be" to make Government House a place for all South Australians.
Opposition Leader Peter Malinauskas welcomed Ms Adamson's appointment.
"Her distinguished career speaks for itself, and I expect she will serve in this role — like her many previous roles — with immense distinction," he said.
Hieu Van Le 'delighted' with replacement
Mr Van Le, who came to Australia as a refugee from Vietnam, has been Governor since 2014.
Mr Marshall said he had done an outstanding job.
"I met with His Excellency on Monday afternoon this week just to let him know about the announcement we were making this morning," he said.
"He was delighted with the announcement that we have just made — he certainly has enjoyed his time in office — in fact he says he sometimes has to pinch himself."
South Australia had Australia's first female governor in Dame Roma Mitchell, who was in the role from 1991–1996.
Former foreign affairs minister Julie Bishop turned down the role in 2019, while another former Liberal minister, Amanda Vanstone, denied being offered it.
