'It's clearly been met': Opposition calls for Victoria to move to next step of eased restrictions
The Victorian Opposition has called for the state to move to the next step of eased coronavirus restrictions, after the 15th-straight day without any new cases or deaths.
Under the original roadmap out of lockdown, the state could move to the “last step” once there were 14 days in a row without a new infection.
However, Premier Daniel Andrews has said the state will need to wait until November 22 until an announcement on that step.
“It’s clearly been met, and he’s [Mr Andrews] changing the goal posts after the event,” Opposition MP David Davis said.
Mr Davis said the Government could relax the rules around masks as the run of no new cases continued.
He said masks made sense in situations where the density of people was high, “but if I walk down the beach with my dog, alone in the morning, and there’s no-one for half a mile, it doesn’t make any sense”.
Government officials have called mask-wearing an “insurance policy” to prevent outbreaks.
Mr Davis criticised the Government for not releasing the health advice and information behind the state’s restrictions, including masks and the stage 4 curfew.
The Opposition has moved a number of motions in Parliament in an attempt to make the policy documents public, which Mr Davis said the community was “entitled to see”.
