Police at a Melbourne beach have been hit with an onslaught of abuse during the dramatic arrest of a woman for breaching coronavirus restrictions.
The angry mob also claimed police pushed a pregnant woman as they were trying to deal with another woman who had failed to provide her name and address.
Police said they were conducting proactive patrols at Altona Beach on Saturday evening when they came across a group not wearing face masks about 6.15pm.
A police spokeswoman said the group became aggressive towards officers when approached and a woman was arrested for refusing to provide her details.
“Once her identity was established (she was) found to be in breach of the chief health officer directions by travelling more than 5km from her home,” the spokeswoman said.
Police said the woman was issued with three infringement notices and released, while several others were also given fines.
Footage of the arrest shows the woman lying on the sand as others hurl abuse at police and try to get in the officers way.
A patch of blood soaked sand can also be seen in the video as the woman was lifted up and taken away.
The group also yelled at police claiming a pregnant woman had been pushed during the arrest.
Police said they would be conducting follow up investigations into the incident and other activity at the beach to “ensure any further breaches of the chief health officer (directions) are appropriately dealt with”.
“Victoria Police will continue to proactively patrol public spaces and will not hesitate to fine those who clearly and blatantly breach the directions,” the police spokeswoman said.
The incident came as another dramatic arrest at St Kilda Beach unfolded when a man allegedly tried to resist four police officers.
As Melburnians flocked to beaches to embrace the warmer weather across the weekend, Premier Daniel Andrews warned the 5km rule, where people aren’t allowed to travel further than that distance from their homes, could be extended if people continued to break rules.
“People love to go to the beach when it’s sunny but there’s a global pandemic on, and we’re very close to beating the second wave,” he said.
“If you want to spend summer at the beach, then that will be the time to do that, if we don’t do anything silly or anything selfish right now.”
Melbourne’s beaches remain open on Monday as one council warned residents they would have no option but to close them if large groups continued to do the wrong thing.
“We are extremely disappointed by the number of people who breached the Victorian chief health officer’s orders and gathered on St Kilda Beach (on Saturday night),” Port Phillip Council CEO Peter Smith said.
“This behaviour is unacceptable and could delay the reopening of Metro Melbourne, as well as putting more lives at risk.
“Unfortunately, if we have large crowds of people doing the wrong thing, then we will have no choice but to close the beach or park as a last resort.”
