Coronavirus pandemic causing burnout and anxiety in Australia's healthcare workers
Something a bit more mellow after the highs of Melbourne's latest COVID figures.
A survey of more than 10,000 Australian healthcare workers has found more than half of them are feeling burnt out by the demands of the coronavirus pandemic, and some are so fed up they are planning to quit.
So far, 61 per cent of the respondents reported anxiety, 58 per cent reported being burnt out and 28 per cent reported depression.
Associate Professor Natasha Smallwood from the Royal Melbourne Hospital conducted the survey and said many respondents added in the comments section that they were planning to leave the workforce due to concerns about their mental health.
She said it was "difficult to know" whether authorities were listening to concerns about anxiety, depression and burnout among healthcare workers.
"The concerns we're seeing are quite categorical and people in very different health professional backgrounds, so nurses, doctors, allied health staff, all indicating that enough's enough and they need to leave," she said.
"They've all got really significant reasons for wanting to leave but they're all feeling guilty that they're having to give up a role they love, but they're having to make that decision. So, yes, I do think we will see people leaving the workforce."
