Professor Sutton would like for aged care residents to see more people

Victoria's Chief Health Officer said he would like to see people in aged care facilities in the state getting more opportunities to see people without spreading coronavirus.

The interim report of the aged care royal commission called for funding to allow residents to be visited by family and friends.

Brett Sutton with hundreds of deaths and staff infections in aged care, "it is really important to have control measures in place".

Professor Sutton has asked his public health team to go away and work on a more "nuanced" approach to visitors.

He acknowledged that being locked up in their rooms for long periods of time can have an impact on the physical and psychological health of aged care residents.

"If that means getting everyone gets in PPE and gets someone into a garden area or moving them to another area away from other residents, away from other staff in a safe manner, then I'd love to see that happen," he said.

"I would love to see an approach that says if you're in a wing that hasn't had cases, if you can be managed from a behavioural perspective and with staff, to get out of the room to get fresh air and to move around for your health that should happen."
