Man to defend murder charge over Pyrmont stabbing on mental health grounds - Sydney Morning Herald

A man has admitted to stabbing his friend to death at a Pyrmont apartment block but will fight a murder charge on mental health grounds, his lawyer says.

Jawid Jawid, 41, was arrested in Parramatta on Thursday evening, after allegedly stabbing his boss Bashir Zaheer to death at the Mirage apartments earlier that day.

Mr Zaheer, 44, was the manager of the building complex on Bunn Street in Pyrmont and employed Mr Jawid as a security guard there.

Both families told Nine News the pair were like brothers after knowing each other for 25 years.

On Saturday, Mr Jawid's lawyer said his client would argue he was "psychologically abused" by Mr Zaheer and suffered post-traumatic stress disorder since escaping war in Afghanistan.

"My client's version, he was psychologically abused by the victim for about five years," Zemarai Khatiz said.

Mr Zaheer's family has categorically denied the allegation.

The stunning claim came after Mr Jawid appeared in Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday, still dressed in a patient gown. He did not apply for bail and it was formally refused.

The court heard Mr Jawid had been admitted to hospital eight times over mental health issues, including two weeks ago, when he tried to take his own life.

"The charge of murder will be defended, his state of mind at the relevant time will be a very relevant factor," Mr Khatiz said.

Mr Zaheer's family said he had taken Mr Jawid under his wing, employing him at the Mirage building where they both lived and worked.

The residents of the block have remembered Mr Zaheer as a man who protected them and showed them kindness.
