"On arrival, we found four patients in traumatic cardiac arrest and one patient with minor injuries," he said.

"We had some very experienced paramedics on the scene.

"Our condolences go out to the patients and family."

Nerang Murwillumbah Road, which Mr Nevins said was "known" for crashes, was closed while the wreckages were cleared.

Police are asking for any witnesses to come forward.

They've described it as a "horrific scene".

Senior Sergeant Brett MacGibbon said the road would remain closed for several hours more.

"There's a lot of work to be done … in terms of identifying these persons and advising next of kin, which at this stage has not been done," he said.

"We are asking other motorists if they can please refrain from going on Nerang Murwillumbah Road at Advancetown unless they desperately need to."

Senior Sergeant MacGibbon said police believe the sedan lost control while moving around a bend and slid into the oncoming ute.
