Coronavirus Victoria: Melbourne COVID-19 live updates - NEWS.com.au

The Herald Sun is reporting the figure is 532, which if confirmed this morning will mark the worst total recorded anywhere in the nation since the pandemic began. The previous highest tally was 484 on Wednesday, July 22. It follows the state’s deadliest day on Sunday when 10 people lost their lives to the virus.

It comes as a grieving son has issued a powerful plea to Victorians on national television after saying goodbye to his coronavirus-stricken father on FaceTime.

Nicholas Barboussas lost his 79-year-old father Paul to the disease on Sunday afternoon. His father had been living at St Basil’s Homes for the Aged in Melbourne, which has now seen 78 cases of COVID-19. The situation was made even worse by the fact that he thought his father was out of harm’s way less than 72 hours ago.

“Put on your mask, listen to the Premier, to the chief health officer,” he told the Today show. “A lot of people that are currently active are between the ages of 20 and 40. You are not invincible. And if you think you are invincible … please think of your grandparents, your parents, your co-workers, the lady in front of you in the checkout at the local supermarket and before you take that first step out of your front door, put on your mask.”

Live Updates

So it's usually about this time of day we hear about coronavirus press conferences and we've got a few times for you so far.

The Prime Minister will be speaking at 10.30am, so we'll bring you the key updates from that shortly.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has just spoken and you can read up on what she said here.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian is slated to speak at 11am.

However, we have not had a confirmation yet on Victoria. We are usually given at least an hour's notice so that could mean a later-than-usual press conference today.

As has been pointed out before, later press conferences are not a good indicator of what's to come.

Four more schools in Victoria have closed today following positive coronavirus tests.

Lalor Secondary College, Copperfield College’s Sydenham campus, Melbourne Girls’ College, Gladstone Park Secondary College and Gisborne Secondary College have all closed for cleaning and contact tracing.

Gisborne Secondary College, which urged staff and students to wear masks almost two weeks ago, also closed on Saturday following a positive test.

Australia's biggest case spike is expected today, with 532 cases reportedly being added to Victoria’s tally.

The Herald Sun is reporting the figure, which if confirmed this morning will mark the worst total recorded anywhere in the nation since the pandemic began.

The previous highest tally was 484 on Wednesday, July 22.

It follows the state's deadliest day on Sunday when 10 people lost their lives to the virus.

Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has told reporters this morning that she is prepared to “slam the border shut” to protect Queensland from the growing Covid-19 community transmission in NSW and Victoria.

Police in Queensland have ramped up new restrictions on travellers from NSW, adding more council areas considered as “hotspots” to the state’s banned travel list.

From today, travellers from Fairfield – or anyone who has visited the suburbs within the council area – will be turned away from the border.

A second worker has become infected with coronavirus at a Costco warehouse in Melbourne’s north.

A message was sent to employees at the Epping facility confirming the staffer last worked on Sunday, July 19, between 10.45am and 3.45pm.

Costco said it would communicate directly with co-workers known to have been in close contact with the individual.

The first worker at the Epping Costco tested positive for coronavirus on July 11.

It comes after a secondary school in the nearby suburb of Lalor closed over the weekend after a confirmed case of COVID-19.

The deputy national chief medical officer, Dr Nick Coatsworth, says videos of Victorians openly defying mask rules in stores are "deeply disturbing".

In particular he drew attention to a woman who was slammed after her outburst at Bunnings staff members in the Melbourne suburb of Narre Warren on Friday.

"It's clearly very disturbing when you see that sort of footage of one Australian citizen putting others in a very difficult situation and I just want to commend the Bunnings staff," he told the Today show.

"I have seen the footage myself. They did a remarkable job staying calm against behaviour that is frankly unacceptable. What we can take away is that the vast majority of Australians find them unacceptable.

"We've obviously all been flooded with messages of support for those Bunnings staff.

"It is not a human rights issue to decide not to wear a mask. It's such a simple intervention.

"I just can't see how it takes away someone's human rights or individual liberty to just have to put a face covering on at the request of government. It is simple. We know it's effective. We know it's the time to do it."

The deputy national chief medical officer, Dr Nick Coatsworth, said the number of infections in aged care facilities were “deeply concerning”.

"We have got over 250 residents with Covid-19, over 250 staff members," he told the ABC this morning. "This is reflective of the community transmission of Covid-19.

"There will be staff members, of course, that are pre-symptomatic and want to go to work and end up bringing Covd-19 into the facilities and that’s what makes this different from New South Wales, the broad range of community transmission."

The biggest aged care cluster is at the Heritage Care’s Epping Gardens facility in Melbourne’s north, where 83 cases, including 61 residents and 22 staff members, have now been linked to the home.

Other aged care clusters on Sunday included;
– 82 cases linked to Estia Health in Ardeer, in Melbourne’s west;
– 78 cases linked to St Basil’s Homes for the Aged in Fawkner, in Melbourne’s north;
– 52 cases linked to the Glendale Aged care facility in Werribee, in Melbourne’s outer southwest;
– 48 cases linked to Estia Health in Heidelberg, in Melbourne’s northeast;
– 39 cases linked to Arcare Aged Care in Craigieburn, in Melbourne’s outer north;
– 27 cases linked to Aurrum Aged Care in Plenty, in Melbourne’s outer northeast;
– 25 cases linked to Regis Aged Care in bayside Brighton in the southeast,
– 19 cases linked to Kirkbrae Presbyrterian Homes in Kilsyth, in Melbourne’s outer east;
– 11 cases linked to Outlook Gardens Aged Care in Dandenong North, in Melbourne’s outer southeast;
– Nine cases have been linked to CraigCare Aged Care Facility in Pascoe Vale, in Melbourne’s northwest.

A Melbourne doctor on the virus front line says GPs feel sidelined in the battle against COVID- 19 – saying poor communication is leading to potentially fatal delays.

GP and former Victorian Australian Medical Association President, Dr Mukesh Haikerwal said the risk to doctors is "massive".

"We're the ones bearing the brunt of this. Our risk is massive," he told the Today show.

"We had 10 deaths already in one night. In my own practice here we had nobody coming through testing positive until July. Now we have about 20."

He said a lack of communication between GPs on the front line and the Health Department is making the situation even worse.

"The problem is people are having their test done outside of general practice," he said.

"You don't know where the test is done, when it's done, how long the result will take and if it's positive what the guidance is for the tracing of other members of the family, other people who are needing to be tested, to make sure that we remove people into isolation who are actually sick and therefore liable to spread it."
