Coronavirus Australia live updates: Crossroads Hotel cluster origins to be revealed within 24 hours - NEWS.com.au

Nine coronavirus cases have now been linked to the Crossroads Hotel, in Sydney’s Casula, with Mr Hunt telling Sky News last night the situation is “serious”.

“But there is an extraordinary job of tracing going on,” Mr Hunt said, adding the message to any patrons who visited the venue between July 3 and 10 is to isolate and submit for testing.

“My understanding is that NSW Health is getting very close to identifying the original source. I am hopeful and confident that within 24 hours they will be in a position to identify that source.”

Mr Hunt refused to speculate on whether the cluster could be linked to Victoria’s worsening COVID-19 situation – where Premier Daniel Andrews announced another 273 infections yesterday after a shocking week of record rises in cases.

Mr Andrews also announced a man in his 70s had died from coronavirus overnight, bringing the national death toll to 108.

NSW reported five new cases of COVID-19 yesterday, Western Australia reported one case and both Queensland and South Australia reported zero new infections.

Students from Prep to Year 10 in Victoria’s locked down areas will return to remote learning from July 20.

Premier Daniel Andrews said it would be a "significant challenge" for parents and teachers, but stressed it was "the only way to go forward".

Year 11 and 12 students in metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire will be exempt from the major change, as well as Year 10 students undertaking VCAL subjects, and students at specialist schools.

The orders will stay in place until at least August 19.

Victoria state had already extended its winter school holidays earlier this month, adding five pupil free days as the number of coronavirus cases began to spike.

“The first thing I want to say is I know this will be very, very challenging for many, many parents,” Mr Andrews added of the move to return to remote and flexible learning.

Mr Andrews said there was “simply no alternative” than to ensure the thousands of students in affected areas were kept home and safe from spreading infection.

As virus cases linked to the Crossroads Hotel in Sydney's south-west start to increase, some have been left “angry” their names and contact details weren’t taken by the venue.

Hundreds of NSW residents are now waiting to receive their test results, with a pop-up testing site set up outside the venue seeking to determine how many other patrons might be infected.

But Lauren, a customer who attended the hotel on Wednesday night, said neither her name or any other contact details were recorded when she visited the pub – leaving her disappointed that more precautions weren’t taken.

“At the time I didn’t think about it too much, to be honest,” the 26-year-old told news.com.au.

“Reflecting on it now, it angers me. During the media conference they mentioned having a list of patrons … is this only the people who booked tables? Where was this list located?

“If they only had one list, why didn’t they lock off the rest of the entrances and have everyone walk through the same entry to sign it?”

Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt has defended the PM's presence at an NRL game last night, calling him one of the "fundamental reasons" Australia's in the position it is against the coronavirus pandemic.

Scott Morrison's attendance at the Shark's game was met with outrage from many, who drew comparisons between his being at the football during Victoria's worsening virus outbreak and his holiday to Hawaii during the bushfire crisis earlier this year.

But, Mr Hunt insisted in an interview with Sky News that the PM had been working throughout the weekend to draft a plan "for Victoria, over and above everything that we've done".

"I know because I was working with him. I've been working with him throughout today, so this fellow never stops.

"He is one of the reasons, perhaps the fundamental reasons, that we are where we are.

"I have never seen anybody work harder in my life and more effectively in protecting a country."

“This is a very challenging time, and I know we are asking a lot of Victorians," Mr Andrews told reporters on Sunday morning.

"But we simply have no choice but to acknowledge the reality that we face and to do what must be done, and that is to follow those rules, to only go out when you need to, and to only go out for the purposes that are lawful."
