Victoria's Chief Health Officer is answering some questions

Q: We had an increase of 27 cases outside hot zones yesterday. How likely is it that we're going to have to shut down other postcodes?

A: I really hope we don't have to. I'm really emphasising that even though these restrictions are in place in those restricted postcodes, there's an obligation on all of us to consider how we minimise our interactions with other people. And so though the stay at home directions apply to those restricted postcodes, all of us across Victoria have to really consider whether we need to see people in other settings, other households, including family members and friends. That will be the best mitigation against new postcodes being included.

Q: What did you tell the Government in terms of how they should operate hotel quarantine? 

A: I haven't been involved in the governance and operation, but it was, you know, jointly oversighted by emergency management within DHHS, Emergency Management Victoria, the department of jobs, precincts and regions.

Q: Do you think it's been botched? Hotel quarantine?

A: Look, an inquiry is upcoming.

Q: Is there any indication that the strain we have in Melbourne is perhaps more virulent than in Sydney or other parts of the country, which is why we have this spread?

A: Yeah, in relation to the strain that might be predominating in Melbourne at the moment, I don't think there's any evidence that it's more virulent. I think the evidence we have from overseas where there's more transmission or faster transmission really related to how people are behaving and the cohort of the population that are infected. I don't think it's a feature of the virus at all.

Q: Is there any new data on how many people are asymptomatic?

A: We do pick up individuals who have no symptoms at the time their tested. Asymptomatic really refers to people who never develop symptoms. They're a genuinely small number. I think it's unlikely that many of them transmit to others. They become infected and it doesn't go further, but a number of people will be tested, have no symptoms at the time, but go on to develop symptoms in the next two or three days. They're different. They can transmit to others more readily. But we just pick up the virus before they've started to develop symptoms.
