Can I travel from Melbourne to NSW if I am not in a hotspot?

Good morning! What's your understanding of travel restrictions for a Melburnian wanting to go to NSW? I live outside of the hotspot postcodes but have worked in one very recently. May I cross the border?

-Askingforafriend

Good question for your friend.

According to the NSW Health website, if you have been in any of Melbourne's hotspots in the last 14 days, you cannot travel to NSW unless they are a resident of NSW or are there for an essential need like medical attention or appearing in court.

“They're upset that they can't see family and friends and of course our local businesses, many of them recovering from the first shutdown, had to close their doors again,” he said.

“But they understand this is the best way to stop the virus.”

What Queensland's easing of restrictions means for residents

You'll be free to order a drink at the bar from midday.(ABC News: Craig Berkman)
Queensland's stage-three restrictions kick in at midday and many people want to know what they can do.

More people will be allowed in pubs, and community sport it back on.

Here is the nuts and bolts of what people can do:

  • Private gatherings - including funerals, weddings and house parties - are opening up to a maximum of 100 people.
  • Weekend and community full-contact sporting competition is back on as long as organisers follow a COVID-safe industry plan.
  • Outdoor sport can go ahead, but physical distancing for spectators is essential.
  • Indoor sport is on too but spectators are limited to one person per 4 square metres of space.
  • Smaller businesses with less than 200 square metres of space can have one person per 2 square metres, up to 20 people at a time.
  • Theatres and concert venues are opening too, likewise at half capacity or one person per 4 square metres (whichever is the largest number).
  • Other places can also open with a COVID-safe plan, including casinos and gaming rooms, nightclubs, food courts and massage businesses.

Texas Governor orders face masks in public

Texas Governor Greg Abbott is ordering face coverings to be worn in public across most of the state.

This is a dramatic ramp up of the Republican's efforts to control spiking numbers of confirmed coronavirus cases.

Mr Abbott, who had pushed Texas' aggressive reopening of the state economy in May, had previously said the government could not order individuals to wear masks.

The new law requires “all Texans to wear a face covering over the nose and mouth in public spaces in counties with 20 or more positive COVID-19 cases, with few exceptions”.

ATO warns against rorting the system

A spokeswoman for the ATO told ABC News "at any particular time, we are reviewing between 2 and 3 per cent of JobKeeper applications". (AAP: Dan Peled)

As the Federal Government undertakes a review of its $70 billion JobKeeper wage subsidy, the ATO told ABC News 3,000 staff would be doing ongoing reviews of JobKeeper applications.

These "compliance verification" reviews were also happening in relation to other COVID-19 related stimulus measures.

If deliberate manipulation is detected, it could result in payments being docked, hefty fines and even jail time.

There has already been more than 6,500 applications for JobKeeper rejected due to ineligibility or fraud, according to the ATO.
