Calls for better messaging for multicultural groups

Federal Labor wants the government to hand over $500,000 worth of grants to multicultural community leaders, to break down communication barriers during the coronavirus pandemic.

Shadow Immigration Minister Kristina Keneally says the recent spike of cases in Victoria has shown the government's efforts to engage with culturally and linguistically diverse communities haven't gone far enough.

Health Authorities say they've redoubled efforts to connect with multicultural groups since the outbreak, but Senator Keneally says those efforts need to be more targeted.

"What's really important is that many emerging culturally and linguistically diverse communities don't have access to some of that government information, or they're more likely to trust their local pastor or their local community group leader," she said.

"So it's about ensuring that grassroots organisations for smaller and emerging communities, are able to effectively and accurately provide vital health information during the coronavirus," she said.

"We need to ensure the right information is getting to the right people in the right way so we can as a whole community take on and fight this virus."

The Acting Immigration Minister Alan Tudge says coronavirus affects all Australians.

"We have had outbreaks on cruise ships, from weddings in the Barossa and people returning from Aspen. None of these involved multicultural communities."

The Government has engaged with more than 5,000 multicultural groups during the pandemic, and says it's worked with SBS to produce videos about the crisis in more than 60 languages.
