An eight-year-old girl has died and several people have been injured after a truck ploughed into a rest area off a highway south of Sydney.

Emergency services were called just after 3:00pm after reports a B-Double truck had crashed into several parked cars at a southbound rest area on the Hume Highway.

A young girl died at the scene and at least four people —three females and one male — were injured and taken to Liverpool Hospital.

A woman is in a critical condition while the others are reported to be serious but stable.

The truck driver, a 44-year-old man from Moss Vale, was not injured and has been taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

NSW Police Acting Superintendent Darren Sly said initial investigations revealed the B-Double entered the Partridge VC rest stop and collided with another truck before hitting three parked cars.

A number of people at the rest stop rendered first aid until emergency services arrived, he said.

"Words cannot describe how tragic this is, especially for the family who has lost a young child," he said.

"With the events of what's been happening with COVID and people trying to get out for the first time, it's tragic, an absolutely tragic loss."

Four people were treated at the scene before being taken to Liverpool Hospital.

Aerial footage of the chaotic aftermath showed skid marks from truck tyres cleaving a path across the entry of rest stop.

At least four other vehicles, a truck and three cars parked near some benches, were pushed to the side, likely because they were in the path of the B-Double.

Paramedics were seen carrying injured people on stretchers and into ambulances.

Acting Superintendent Sly said crash investigators would be at the scene "for a number of hours" to determine the cause of the crash.

"It's very serious, while at this stage we're of an open mind with the circumstances and what has occurred but it's a traffic accident where people have died and people are injured, so of course police are taking it very seriously."
