Porsche driver charged with multiple offences as Melbourne lit in blue to pay tribute to killed police officers - ABC News

Police have charged the driver of a Porsche with fleeing the scene of Wednesday's truck crash that killed four officers, as detectives face a days-long wait to interview the driver of the truck behind the crash.

Key points:

  • Porsche driver Richard Pusey, 41, has been charged with failing to assist at the scene of the crash
  • He has also been charged with reckless conduct endangering life, speeding and failing to remain after a drug test
  • Police believe they may have to wait several days before interviewing the driver of the truck that killed the officers

Leading Senior Constable Lynette Taylor, Constable Glen Humphris, Senior Constable Kevin King and Constable Josh Prestney were killed when they were hit by a truck on the Eastern Freeway in Kew.

The officers were standing in the emergency lane when they were killed, as they prepared to impound the Porsche 911 being driven by 41-year-old Melbourne mortgage broker Richard Pusey, which was allegedly travelling at 140 kilometres per hour before it was pulled over.

Police have alleged Mr Pusey, who was not injured in the crash, then took graphic photos of the crash scene, which were posted online, before fleeing the scene on foot.

Facebook has since removed the photos.

Overnight police charged Mr Pusey with a range of offences, including:

  • Reckless conduct endangering life
  • Speeding
  • Failing to remain after a drug test
  • Failing to render assistance
  • Failing to exchange details
  • Possessing a drug of dependence
  • Destruction of evidence
  • Three counts of committing an indictable offence while on bail

He has been remanded in custody and is expected to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court today.

Police are still waiting to interview the driver of the refrigerated semi-trailer truck, which Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton said appeared to have moved from the right-most lane of the freeway to the emergency lane shortly before it hit the officers while travelling at 100kph.

Deputy Commissioner Shane Patton said the driver of the truck that hit the officers was still in hospital after suffering a medical episode and may not be interviewed by investigators for days.

"He's not fit to be interviewed. It may be a number of days. We have taken blood from him and we're working through all our forensic examination of the scene, as well as examination of the vehicles involved," he told 7.30.

Chief Commissioner Ashton said on Thursday officers had searched the truck driver's Cranbourne home in the hours after the crash and "what was found at that premises is still the subject of ongoing investigation".

Melbourne lit up in blue to 'honour these four heroes'

Last night, Melbourne landmarks were illuminated in blue in tribute to the two senior constables and two newly graduated constables killed in the crash.

Physical-distancing measures in place due to the coronavirus pandemic means no public vigil is possible to mark what is the biggest loss of officer lives in a single incident in Victoria Police's history.

Police and Emergency Services Minister Lisa Neville said the blue landmarks would "honour these four heroes".

"This devastating incident reminds us once again of your unfaltering bravery and selflessness … I encourage everyone to pay their respects and reflect on all our police do for the community," she said.

"This is an unimaginable tragedy and a senseless loss of lives. Josh and Glen were relatively new to the force, and Lynette and Kevin had served the community for many years — all had dedicated their lives to keeping us safe."
