Fatal Eastern Freeway crash involving truck and police officers closes inbound lanes - ABC News

A fatal crash involving a truck and a number of police officers has closed a large section of Melbourne's Eastern Freeway around Kew.

Key points:

  • The ABC understands more than one person has been killed
  • A semi-trailer appears to have hit several cars and one car is trapped under the truck
  • The Eastern Freeway is closed in both directions between Chandler Highway and Bulleen Road

VicRoads said the crash happened just before the Chandler Highway and the freeway had been closed in both directions between the Chandler Highway and Bulleen Road.

Hundreds of cars travelling at peak hour are believed to have been caught up in the closure.

The ABC understands more than one person has been killed in the crash, which happened shortly before 5:40pm.

It is unclear if police officers are among those who have been injured or killed.

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton will brief the media later this evening.

It is understood a semi-trailer has hit several cars and one car is trapped beneath the truck.

There are at least 20 emergency vehicles at the scene and officials are trying to get cars to turn around across the median strip into the outbound lanes.

"As the incident is dynamic, we do not have confirmed details at this stage," Victoria Police said in a brief statement.

"It is believed multiple vehicles are involved in the collision ... a number of police officers are believed to have been involved."

Motorists urged to avoid the area

VicRoads said motorists were urged to exit the citybound lanes "as early as possible and to find an alternate route".

There are also long delays outbound as a result of the cars being turned around.

It is expected the freeway will be closed for some time.

"Outbound traffic is heavily delayed through the area so motorists should allow extra time," VicRoads said.

"The closure is under Victoria Police control."

ABC Radio Melbourne talkback caller Therese, who was driving on the freeway at the time, said she was about 500 metres from the crash scene.

"There's heaps and heaps of police cars, some marked, some unmarked police cars," she said.

"[There's] a fire engine and a couple of ambulances, even a couple of people walking [on the road]."
