The long lines we've all become accustomed to seeing at airports this year might suggest they've never been busier, but the truth is air traffic is still lower than it was before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sydney Airport today released its traffic performance report for June, which revealed it had 2,564,716 passengers that month – some 25 per cent lower than June 2019.
Domestic traffic is getting closer to pre-pandemic levels, down 10.6 per cent on 2019 numbers, but the number of international passengers is barely half of what it used to be.
CEO Geoff Culbert said the airport was still working to improve its service for travellers.
"The increasing demand for travel is encouraging but it's clearly creating challenges for an industry that is still trying to rebuild operationally," he said.
"With the June long weekend and school holiday peak behind us, we will continue to work on our operational recovery alongside our airline partners and each of the 800 organisations across the airport."
