Cruise ship with over 100 COVID-19 cases docks in Sydney - 9News

Hundreds of passengers have disembarked from a cruise ship with more than 100 COVID-19 cases on board after it docked in Sydney this morning.

The Coral Princess docked at the overseas passenger terminal in the harbour early this morning, with 114 COVID-positive crew, and four COVID-positive passengers on board.

Amid fears of a second Ruby Princess-style outbreak, Premier Dominic Perrottet has said passengers will only be allowed to disembark after they return a negative rapid antigen test.

However, this potentially contradicts the rules in place from NSW Health, which would allow any positive-testing passenger to travel home wearing a mask on private transport - which would of course necessitate disembarking.

9News understands the rapid antigen tests were not checked by authorities as passengers disembarked into the city.

"No one asked for it so I won't give it to them," one passenger said.

"They treat people as though they are honest," a passenger added.

"No. But I have got it here if you want to look. Nobody checked," another passenger said.

The ship will depart Sydney later tonight to continue the trip.

The Coral Princess docked at Eden yesterday and 800 passengers visited the town.

Many praised the on-board safety regulations.

"I feel much safer on board the ship than I do on land," one said.

"There are no safety protocols on the land anymore."

Another said they had not encountered anybody with COVID-19 on board.

NSW recorded 10,622 COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours and 15 deaths as infections continue to remain stubbornly high amid the winter surge.

The $2 billion Australian cruising industry only re-opened about six weeks ago, after more than two years in mothballs during the pandemic.

The arrival of COVID-19 in Australia is often attributed to the Ruby Princess, a cruise ship that was allowed to release COVID-positive passengers into the Sydney community in the early days of the outbreak.
