Union head says 'morons' and 'professional protesters' caused construction shutdown

Here's more on the protests in Melbourne yesterday - CFMEU secretary John Setka says he believes only a small number of protesters who were at the union headquarters yesterday taking part in action that turned violent were actually union members.

"There was a sprinkling of construction workers there, our members, but the rest, I wouldn't even know who they are," he told Nine's Today show.

He said some "rent-a-crowds" and "professional protesters" who had been involved in violent clashes with police in Richmond over the weekend were outside the CFMEU offices on Monday. He said he believed there were neo-Nazis in the crowd, despite also saying "I wouldn't know one if I fell over one". He said there were also anti-vaccination protesters not involved in the construction industry.

"Thanks to these morons, 300,000 Victorians are sitting at home for at least the next couple of weeks," he said. "It could drag out even longer."

Meanwhile, Labor MP Bill Shorten has hit out at "man-baby Nazis" who he claims helped orchestrate the violent protests.

Mr Shorten told Channel Nine "people who call themselves Nazis" had used encrypted message systems to bring in a "rent-a-crowd".

"Some of those people in the crowd were construction workers, but others I'm reliably informed, were fake tradies, they'd been down to the reject shop and got themselves a $2 hi-vis hoodie so they can pretend they were construction [workers]," he said.

It’s understood more protests are planned in Melbourne today.
