If you've ever heard the saying "abs are built in the kitchen", you know that exercise alone is rarely enough to create the flat belly we desire. So, what exactly can we do in the kitchen for dinner to work on our midsections?

There are specific veggies—the cruciferous family of vegetables—that act as a diuretic. Foods that act as a diuretic can help us release water and prevent belly bloat during the day! Eating these foods at dinner in particular helps shed water weight so that you wake up feeling lighter than the night before.

You may have heard of diuretics from their medical use in treating high blood pressure, fluid retention issues, and heart or kidney conditions. Yet, there are many foods that act as mild diuretics and can be used preventatively for our health!

So, what foods act as a natural diuretic? You can't really go wrong by increasing your fruits and veggie intake, but there are a few vegetables that particularly have a significant diuretic effect.

  • Dandelion: This leafy green is less commonly found in the produce department, but can be boiled and prepared as tea!
  • Celery: Most recently popularized in juice form, this veggie has been used as a diuretic traditionally for centuries!
  • Asparagus: This powerhouse veggie contains small amounts of asparagine—the amino acid responsible for its diuretic effect.
  • Parsley: Easy to chop and add to any salad dish, this herb is potent in its ability to prevent fluid reabsorption.

Eating vegetables for their diuretic effect can be even more powerful when combined with a low sodium diet and regular exercise. Sodium and water generally work together: more salt in our diet causes more water retention in our bodies. Exercise works as a natural diuretic through sweating it out! You are releasing water naturally through your pores—which translates to reduced belly bloat from body fluids later in the day!

In fact, the DASH diet, a diet that is proven to lower blood pressure, is known to work so well because of its high fruit and veggie effect contributing to fluid release from the body! If you are already prescribed a diuretic or have a medical condition, be sure to consult with your healthcare team before implementing a diuretic diet.
