New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian has given the clearest single yet the state has given up on any goal of getting Covid-19 case numbers back down to zero.
When asked directly if the state could still reach zero, given cases during the last two days had been in the 400s, the Premier on Sunday said eliminating the Delta variant was “near impossible”.
“We have to learn to live with it. But the best chance we have to live with it freely and safely is to get the case numbers down as low as possible.”
At his daily case numbers update, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews was even blunter when asked for his assessment on the situation north of the Murray.
“There is no way they are going to get to zero,” he said. “They are going to have to vaccinate their way out of this”.

On Sunday morning, NSW recorded 415 new cases in the 24 hours to 8pm the previous day. That’s down on the 466 from the day before but still the second highest number ever recorded in a single day in the state.
Four people died over the same period.
Statewide, around 24,500 shots were administered with half of the population of NSW having now received at least one vaccination dose.
However, with infections still spreading, in parts of western Sydney and around Dubbo particularly, the Premier was pushed on whether zero cases was achievable any more.
“I think all of us accept that completely eliminating Delta is something that is near impossible,” Ms Berejiklian said.
“When you look around Australia and other states, who had lower case numbers than us, it is very (difficult) to get those down.
“But our aim is to have case numbers as low as possible and to have vaccination rates as high as possible. We have to achieve both in order for us to live freely into the future.
“We have to learn to live with it. But the best chance we have to live with it freely and safely is to get the case numbers down as low as possible.”
Ms Berejiklian said NSW couldn’t afford high numbers “at any stage”.
“As we have seen overseas, it takes off very quickly in communities which have higher vaccination rates than we have, and certainly we have a lot of work to do, but I’m absolutely convinced we will get there.”

Extra Pfizer doses are on their way to NSW after the federal government announced it had bought one million shots from Poland.
Of those, 500,000 will be heading for Sydney.
Asked if it was fair that NSW was getting half the Polish doses while Victoria would only get 175,000, Mr Andrews was matter of fact.
“They have to be given more vaccines in NSW because nothing else they are doing is working.
“This is where they are at now … they’ve got to vaccinate their way out of this.
“It’s not to say that we do not have need – but there’s is far greater at the moment.
“They have 400 cases each day, there is no way they are going to get to zero cases.”
Mr Andrews, who announced 25 new cases overnight as Victoria struggles to get its outbreak under control, said his state still had the possibility of getting to zero.
“We’ve got a chance to do what we’ve done before, and drive these case numbers down.”
