Great white shark sightings nearly close Nauset Beach all day - Boston Herald

As I pulled into the Nauset Beach parking lot on Monday about 11 a.m., the parking attendant told me there would be no swimming allowed for at least an hour.

“Shark,” she said.

Red flags indicating “dangerous marine life” dotted the long coastline and signs with photos of great white sharks were posted along the beach entrances.

Beautiful Nauset Beach has been one of many hot spots for shark activity on Cape Cod, and Monday was no different.

After an hour, the lifeguards changed the flags from red back to yellow, signaling that it was safe to go into the water — which was short lived.

About 15 minutes later, the red flag was up yet again, and people flocked back to their chairs, disappointed.

Within the last week, there have been upwards of 50 great white shark sightings off the coast of Cape Cod, according to the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy.

One shark was spotted by a pilot just 75 yards off Nauset Beach while I was there, which triggered the second alert of the day with lifeguards again changing the flags from yellow to red.

Throughout the course of the day, there had been a collective 30 minutes of swim time, and I also saw a seal swimming close to shore, a common occurrence during my many years of going to Nauset.

Five white sharks were tagged off the Cape Cod coastline on Friday alone, according to the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy, as the season picks up and great whites enjoy the warmer waters and plentiful seal population.
