A third man has been charged over the death of a Melbourne forklift driver allegedly found hidden at a suburban property in the city’s southeast.
Human remains believed to be Doveton man Brendon Farrell were uncovered at a Noble Park property on Friday evening, more than five weeks after he vanished from his home.
Missing persons squad detectives raided a house in Doveton on Monday afternoon, seized property and arrested two men.
A Doveton man, 49, was charged with murder and remanded to face Melbourne Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
Another Doveton man, 39, was charged with unrelated offences and remanded to face court at a later date.
The arrests come two days after a Hampton Park man, 30, and Noble Park man, 49, were charged over Mr Farrell’s allegedly suspicious disappearance.
The Hampton Park man was charged with murder, while the Noble Park man was charged with accessory to murder.
Mr Farrell, 32, was last seen alive by a friend about 12.30pm on May 31 at his home in Kidds Rd, Doveton, where he lived in a rear bungalow behind the main building.
Police allege a “significant, violent altercation” involving weapons took place at the property the same day Mr Farrell disappeared.
His mum, Val Hellyer, posted a heartbreaking tribute to her son after his body was found.
“My son, they found you at last but not in the way any mother wants,” she said.
“I am so heartbroken a part of my world has been taken away but my love for you my son never will be taken away.
“Until I can put you to rest and for the rest of my life never forget I love you your heartbroken mum.”
Mr Farrell’s sister Simone Hellyer said her brother had a heart of gold, was family orientated and adored his baby niece.
“He’d do anything for anyone that needed his help,” she said.
“He was my rock, I told him everything, he made me feel safe and protected, and he was first and foremost just a great brother.
“The last time I saw you, you were so bloody happy presenting your one and only niece her new bibs.
“The proud look in your eyes and your big smile nobody could wipe off your face. You were one of a kind. I will forever hold you so close to my heart.”
Detective Inspector Andrew Stamper said Mr Farrell spoke to his mum almost daily until he went missing.
“The fact that Brendon hasn’t been seen since that time, and we know that he was a man that kept in regular contact with his family, we know that he was mixing in some pretty bad circles, that’s what leads us to the sad hypothesis that he’s met with foul play,” Inspector Stamper said last week.
Inspector Stamper said Mr Farrell had a difficult life, marred by problems with the drug ice and was surrounded by poor company, but detectives were determined to provide answers for his family.
“We don’t back away from the fact that Brendon made some bad choices in his life, but he loved his family, his family loved him, and he deserves our full attention to try and find the answers about what happened to him,” he said.
Detectives scoured thick scrub and open parkland near the Cranbourne Dandenong Pistol Club last Tuesday before finding the remains in Noble Park.
“A post-mortem is being conducted to formally identify human remains which were located at an address in Noble Park,” a police spokeswoman said.
Police said the investigation remained ongoing and anyone with information was urged to come forward to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
