Brisbane backpacker hostel linked to COVID-19 case, another 19 cases detected in crew of bulk carrier - ABC News

A West Australian man who has been living in a Brisbane backpacker hostel has tested positive to COVID-19, Queensland Health Minister Yvette D'Ath says.

Ms D'Ath said he travelled to Brisbane from the Philippines and had completed hotel quarantine, but became unwell after he left quarantine.

The man was infectious in the community since July 22 and was staying in the City Backpackers hostel on Roma Street.

Guests at both City Backpackers and Joe's Place Backpackers next door are in lockdown awaiting test results.

Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young voiced concern at the number of COVID-positive people who have been in the Queensland community.

"This is the thirteenth incursion of the virus into the community in Queensland over the last six weeks," Dr Young said.

"So it is becoming  increasingly concerning we are having these repeated incursions of the virus into Queensland.

"We are contact tracing people in the Roma Street backpackers."

Another 19 cases were detected in the crew of the bulk carrier MV Sanyu off the Queensland coast.

Dr Young said nurses visited the ship yesterday and 19 of the 21 crew tested positive to COVID-19.

"We have two separate issues today," she said.

"The second issue that we have is a gentleman who was in hotel quarantine at the Quest Hotel in Brisbane, left hotel quarantine after three negative tests, then subsequently became unwell so went to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital emergency department where he was tested late on Monday night," Dr Young said.

She said she was expecting genome sequencing later today to confirm where the man acquired the infection.

Dr Young said masks were critical and she believed this was why there has not been widespread community transmission during the latest outbreaks.

"Given we are seeing an increased number of cases across the nation, it is very very important we are not complacent in Queensland with vaccination," Dr Young said.

"It may be what makes the difference going forward.

"So if we do have an outbreak in Queensland, as we can see from NSW, the people who are being protected are the people being vaccinated."

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Qantas said the female flight attendant fined yesterday over COVID-19 border direction breaches has not been back to work since she tested positive, as she is still in hotel quarantine.

It is understood the airline will investigate her behaviour and the police incidents that led to the $4,135 fine once she returns to work.

MV Sanyu crew coming to Brisbane

Health authorities will be working closely with Maritime Safety Queensland to organise the best possible response to keep the ship's crew safe.

“The bulk carrier Sanyu came into Torres Strait waters on Monday and asked for a pilot and then disclosed that they had a lot of sick people on that ship," Dr Young said.

“It's been organised that the ship will steam around to Weipa … and then we will bring the sick crew down to Brisbane to be managed in one of our COVID facilities in Brisbane.

"The ship came originally from the Philippines and all of the crew, I understand, are from the Philippines."
