Furore erupts over Euro 2020 racial abuse

By Bevan Shields

Social media giants are being threatened with huge fines unless they do more to stamp out racist online abuse, as England’s defeat at the Euro 2020 final triggers a fresh reckoning over race relations in football.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the people targeting three black players who missed spot-kicks in the penalty shootout against Italy should “crawl back under the rock from which you emerged”, while his culture minister vowed to push ahead with new laws designed to curb online attacks.

“It is totally unacceptable that players have to endure this abhorrent behaviour,” the Football Association president said.

“It must stop now and all those involved should be held accountable.”

‘We haven’t hit the peak’: NSW Deputy Premier tells Sydney to brace for more cases

By Broede Carmody

NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro was speaking on the Today show a short while ago.

He was asked if the state’s coronavirus numbers are expected to be as bad as yesterday, when 112 cases were reported. Here’s what he had to say:

“We haven’t hit the peak. My sense is we’ll see similar numbers to yesterday. Those numbers haven’t come in officially yet, but that’s the way it’s been trending. There’s no reason to suspect anything less than the same numbers as yesterday, maybe a tad higher.

“It’s the rollercoaster ride we’re on. At the moment, there’s too many people in the community who are infectious and haven’t been isolating and that’s why we expect numbers to continue to rise.”

As for how long Sydney’s lockdown will last after Friday, Mr Barilaro said he expected stay-at-home orders to be “weeks in the making”.

“[The Premier] will have more to say today or tomorrow and we’ll be upfront and honest with the public about what lockdown looks like. [But] if people keep doing the right thing, stop mingling, avoid anything that’s not essential, we can get on top of it.”

McDonalds, petrol station among Victoria’s exposure sites

By Broede Carmody

As we revealed yesterday, Victoria is on high alert after a group of removalists from Greater Sydney travelled to Melbourne while infectious with COVID-19.

Two of the removalists have since tested positive in NSW after delivering furniture to the City of Hume, in Melbourne’s north, and picking up goods from the City of Maribyrnong, in the city’s north-west. A family in Melbourne’s north is now isolating, as is an entire apartment block in the north-west.

Victorian authorities have listed 10 exposure sites so far, including a Coles in Craigieburn and a service station in Broadmeadows.

The most recent areas of concern, which came through at 10.30pm last night, include a Mobil service station and McDonalds in Ballan – a small town about 80 kilometres north-west of Melbourne.

Both sites are Tier 1, meaning anyone who visited either location on Thursday, July 8 between 5pm and 7pm is considered a close contact. In Victoria, close contacts must immediately get tested and quarantine for 14 days regardless of the result.

Cash for Sydney businesses after NSW weighed up its own JobKeeper

By Alexandra Smith, David Crowe and Lucy Cormack

Cash grants will go to small businesses struggling to survive Sydney’s lockdown under a federal government plan devised after NSW had finalised a now shelved $4 billion package to deliver its own version of JobKeeper.

The grants will be announced as early as today after Prime Minister Scott Morrison said a cash flow boost for businesses last year had been “one of the most effective measures” of economic support in the pandemic.

An announcement on the rescue package will follow Premier Gladys Berejiklian’s warning on Monday that it was “almost impossible” to imagine Sydney’s lockdown ending as planned on Friday, as new cases climbed by 112.
