Detectives have found what appear to be human remains as part of their investigation into the disappearance of Melbourne woman Ju "Kelly" Zhang.
Key points:
- The remains were found in a tip in the outer northern suburb of Wollert
- Assistant Commissioner Bob Hill said he hoped it would bring closure to Ms Zhang's family after a traumatic time
- A 35-year-old man was charged with one count of murder in February, and investigations are ongoing
The remains were found at a Wollert landfill site about 2:00pm today, Victoria Police said. They are yet to be formally identified.
A crime scene has been set up at the Bridge Inn Road landfill and officers from the Major Crime Scene Unit are investigating.
Ms Zhang, 33, was last seen at her Epping home on the evening of February 1.
At the time, police said it was very unusual for Ms Zhang to leave her eight-year-old son behind.
A 35-year-old Doncaster man was charged with one count of murder later in February.
A number of searches were conducted earlier this year in bushland in the Heidelberg West and Alphington areas.
Missing Persons Squad detectives started an "intensive search" at the Wollert landfill site on Tuesday.
Police said Ms Zhang's parents had arrived several weeks ago from China and were "distraught" waiting for news after completing hotel quarantine.
"I commend the Missing Persons Squad, Crime Command and other members of Victoria Police for their tireless efforts during this investigation," Crime Command Assistant Commissioner Bob Hill said in a statement.
"Our members have worked under very difficult and trying conditions to ensure that every avenue of enquiry has been exhausted so we could provide answers to Ju's family and friends.
"We know this has been an incredibly difficult and traumatic time for them. We hope that this will bring the closure they need and Ju can finally be laid to rest."
A coroner will conduct a post-mortem examination on the remains.
"The investigation into the matter remains ongoing," a Victoria Police spokesperson said.
Anyone with information about Ms Zhang's disappearance is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
