Gladys Berejiklian accused of ‘double standards’ after Parliament dinner photo - NEWS.com.au

She’s been lauded for her handling of the Covid-19 pandemic over the last 12 months, but now Gladys Berejiklian has been accused of exercising “double standards” amid her state’s latest outbreak.

On Tuesday night, the NSW Premier attended a dinner at Parliament House, hosted by the NSW National Party to celebrate the state budget. Also in attendance was Agriculture Minister Adam Marshall, who was unknowingly infected with coronavirus at the time.

There were fears the dinner could have acted as a “superspreader event”, even though there have been no other confirmed infections among attendees thus far – with Ms Berejiklian and NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard among those who returned a negative result after undergoing rapid testing.

“Health has made their assessments and deemed that I am a casual contact. I was tested very early this morning and isolated and returned a negative test a couple of hours ago and I will continue to follow health advice,” the Premier told reporters today.

Despite this, an image of Ms Berejiklian at the dinner – in which Mr Marshall can be seen at a table in the background – has seemingly landed her in hot water.

Ms Berejiklian also stressed in today’s press conference that she didn’t speak to Adam Marshall at all during the dinner, and to be clear, the man she is pictured standing next to in the viral photo is not Mr Marshall.

But social media users were quick to draw parallels between the Premier’s potential exposure to Mr Marshall and shoppers at Bondi Junction’s Westfield – where customers across two levels of the centre’s Myer have been ordered to quarantine for 14 days, regardless of whether they’re vaccinated or return a negative test result.

“Talk about double standards, the people involved in the Myer exposure site who have to isolate for two weeks, even with a negative result or fully vaccinated should be absolutely furious,” wrote one woman.

“This is quite intriguing,” wrote another.

Others, however, came to the Premier’s defence – writing that they have “great faith” in her and her team and she possibly didn’t face the same isolation consequences “because it is not possible to be as precise about the movements of all of those in Myer”.

NSW chief health officer Dr Kerry Chant provided some insight into what leads to the judgments when questioned at today’s press conference, explaining it came down to assessing each venue and understanding “the way transmission occurs”.

“What we do is assess each venue, so not every venue is the same, with the size of the venue, you have to pass on the venue – if it is a venue the size of a massive area, that is very different than a single room,” she explained.

“[It] is the duration you are there, there are multiple factors as well as the infectivity that is assessed of the individual that is there at the time.”

In stores at somewhere like Bondi Junction, transmission in some recent cases has occurred after “fleeting” contact because of the highly contagious nature of the Delta strain.

“I’m not saying that someone down the far end of the hall gives it to a person, what I’m saying is a person walks along – they might be someone that comes into contact inadvertently when you cross over,” Dr Chant said.

“You know yourself, when you are crossing over to get onto escalators, you are facing the individual, not necessarily social distancing at all times; when you are navigating your way through racks of clothes, sometimes you inadvertently come into contact. That is the sort of contact I am talking about, that proximity.”
