The Virgin Airlines flight attendant who visited three east coast cities before she tested positive for COVID-19 was a household contact of an infectious worker at a seafood wholesaler in Sydney's inner west.
Key points:
The airline attendant had not known she was infectious when she went on the flights
Passengers and crew on the five flights had worn masks and are being contacted
The number of cases linked to Great Ocean Foods, which is linked to the Bondi cluster, has risen to 11
Authorities raised the alarm yesterday about the risk of infection from Great Ocean Foods in Marrickville, warning entire households that received deliveries from the seafood wholesaler to isolate and get tested.
Late last night, it was revealed a Sydney-based Virgin Australia flight attendant who had completed flights to Brisbane, Melbourne and the Gold Coast had also tested positive.
Today, Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant said the airline attendant was a close household contact of a worker at Great Ocean Foods and had not known she was infectious when she went on the flights.
The number of cases linked to the business, which is linked to the Bondi cluster, had risen to 11.
"The Great Ocean Foods outbreak — we look at household contacts of people who worked there and this has been a household contact, a close contact of someone who works a Great Ocean Foods," Dr Chant said.
Passengers and crew on the five flights had worn masks, Dr Chant said.
"But the task ahead of us is making sure we get the message to all those individuals on those flights, work with our colleagues interstate and get testing and then we can assess whether a transmission has arisen but we have other layers of protection."
All staff and customers who visited the business between Monday and Friday this week, as well as their household contacts, are considered close contacts.
They've been instructed to get tested and isolate for 14 days, regardless of the result.
The close contact advisory also extends to any person who "directly received a delivery from Great Ocean Foods" in the same period. Dr Chant said delivery drivers associated with the business had contracted the virus.
Virgin Australia said the Sydney-based flight attendant worked on five services while potentially infectious on June 25 and 26.
In a statement, the airline said it was contacting all other staff who were considered close contacts and would require them to self-isolate.
State health authorities have been contacting people who were potentially exposed to the virus and the company has provided flight manifests.
Border restrictions with NSW meant passenger numbers were limited on four of the flights, the exception being a flight between Brisbane and Melbourne on Friday afternoon.
The flights the crew member worked on were:
Friday (25 June):
- VA939 Sydney - Brisbane
- VA334 Brisbane - Melbourne
Saturday (26 June):
- VA827 Melbourne - Sydney
- VA517 Sydney - Gold Coast
- VA524 Gold Coast - Sydney
