Pedestrians clear out of CBD in droves after second lockdown - The Age

The Stay at Home directions, which came into force on July 8 at 11.59pm, state residents should remain in their homes except to buy groceries or necessary items, for exercise, to seek healthcare or complete care giving duties, or for work.

Weekday road traffic was below normal levels in all postcodes across Melbourne between July 8 and 14.

But two postcodes bucked the trend when it came to declining weekend traffic - Broadmeadows and Meadow Heights both had higher numbers of vehicles on the road on July 11 and 12 compared to the week before.

Pedestrian movement around train stations on the City Loop declined sharply, with Melbourne Central's foot traffic down 42 per cent compared to the previous week, and Flinders Street down 27 per cent.

But some commuters decided to try a different way to enter and exit the city - commuter cyclists increased 10 per cent on the five days up to July 10, with afternoon counts up 20 per cent compared to the same period the week before.

Health Minister Jenny Mikakos said it was heartening that pedestrian rates in Melbourne's CBD were dropping, but strict adherence to the rules for leaving home had to continue.

"It’s good to see the majority of Victorians are doing the right thing – but we want to see these numbers continue to go down," she said.

"There are strictly four reasons to leave the home – whilst masks are an added protection measure – Victorians should still only be leaving the home for those four reasons."

Premier Daniel Andrews on Sunday announced face coverings would become mandatory in Melbourne and Mitchell Shire from 11.59pm on Wednesday, with people caught without them facing a $200 fine.
