DEADLINE FOR TOWERS

Residents in Melbourne’s nine quarantined public housing towers are in day five of “hard lockdown”, with the testing of all 3000 residents completed overnight.

Those who tested positive cannot leave their rooms, while it is expected others will move to stage three restrictions like the rest of greater Melbourne.

TEMPERATURE CHECKS FOR STUDENTS

Children at schools across Melbourne’s locked-down zones will undergo daily temperature checks next term.

More than 14,000 infra-red thermometers will be sent to public, independent and Catholic schools along with early childhood education and care services.

The new rules were foreshadowed by Mr Andrews as an extra measure that could be adopted in an effort to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Education Minister James Merlino said the daily checks would “help make sure unwell students stay at home and do not risk spreading coronavirus”.

“I understand that this is a stressful time for parents, but we are following the best medical advice and taking every possible precaution to ensure the safety of all Victorians,” he said.

Families of any child who returns a higher than normal temperature will be urged to seek coronavirus testing or health advice.

Children who attend a school in metropolitan Melbourne or Mitchell Shire will have an extra week of holidays if they’re in prep to year 10.

Those in years 11 and 12, or year 10 students who take a VCE subject, and specialist school students will be able to continue attending campuses from Monday.

Private schools are pre-empting a return to remote learning, issuing their own plans to parents.

Parents of students at Caulfield Grammar School were sent a letter informing them remote learning will return for grade three to year 10 students next Wednesday.

3AW reported similar scenarios at Beaconhills Christian College in Pakenham, Tintern Grammar School, Lowther Hall, scotch College, Ivanhoe Grammar School, Carey Baptist Grammar School, Assumption College in Kilmore and St Michael’s Grammar School in St Kilda.
